DTLR Secretary of State Stephen Byers has granted a restricted bulky goods consent for the site, which means that it will be available to traditional out-of-town occupiers and will not effectively become an extension to the Trafford Centre.
The decision could also clear the way for an extension to the Manchester Metrolink tram system into Trafford park to serve the Trafford centre, the Manchester United football stadium and the Imperial War Museum. Peel had previously offered to part-fund the construction of the line but this was dependent on winning planning permission for the Giants Field site.
Mike Butterworth, Managing Director of the Trafford Centre said: "The development will compliment the retail mix of the Trafford Centre by providing consumers with a range of goods not currently available within the Centre. It also means the prospect of gaining a Metrolink through Trafford Park to the Centre has been improved because Peel are willing to commit some of the profits from the Giants Field development back into the cost of building the Metrolink extension."
