San Fran Close to Owning Old U.S. Mint

SAN FRANCISCO-A federal agency plans to transfer ownership of the historic U.S. Mint if public review does not create any obstacles. The building may be renovated as a museum, office complex or retail area, or a combination of all of these.

SAN FRANCISCO-San Francisco city officials have made a tentative agreement with the federal government that will allow the city to take over the Old U.S. Mint. Under the agreement, San Francisco would renovate and reopen the 128-year-old, vacant landmark as a museum or mixed-use property.

Located at Fifth and Mission Streets, the 75,000-sf building is a national landmark that was constructed in 1869. The building was designed by Alfred B. Mullett, who, as Supervising Architect of the Treasury Department, oversaw the design and construction of more than 40 Federal buildings across America In the 1900′s, the mint was the federal depository for precious metals, and produced millions of coins.
