Austin, Round Rock Undergo Top-Level Changes

AUSTIN-Austin City Manager Jesus Garza heeds a beckon to manage the Lower Colorado River Authority. Round Rock Mayor Robert Stluka has eyes on being a lobbyist in the state legislature. Both men have been instrumental in community growth.

AUSTIN-First, Kirk Watson, Austin’s high-flying mayor resigned in 2001 to run for Texas attorney general. Now, city manager Jesus Garza, who turned Watson’s policy initiatives into reality, has said he will resign in April. And in Round Rock, Mayor Robert Stluka said Monday that he will not run for a second term this year.

The changes come at key times for both communities, which more than any others, drive the Central Texas economy. Both are dealing with the economic slowdown in general and the more severe technology slowdown in particular.

Garza leaves the city to manage the Lower Colorado River Authority’s water supplies and environmental policies. Stluka said he’ll spend more time as a lobbyist before the Texas Legislature.
