Site work begins this week to prepare for construction, Nancy Tucker, a Rouse spokeswoman, tells GlobeSt.com. The work consists of clearing a portion of the 148-acre tract and the mall footprint. The developers had previously said work would begin in late 2001. She says the design plan for the center is still being developed.

The center is part of a bigger 1,677-acre development at the intersection of Interstate 10 and Loop 1604, one of San Antonio's fastest growing areas. Other parts of the development are the La Cantera Golf Club and Palmer Course at La Cantera, the Six Flags Fiesta Texas theme park and the Westin La Cantera Resort.

The Shops at La Cantera will join several other retail developments in north San Antonio either in operation or under construction. One is the Forum shopping center at 1604 and Interstate 35, which will have 1.2 million sf when it is built out.

The shopping center, anchored by Nieman-Marcus, Nordstrom's, Dillard's and Foley's, is expected to have 150 specialty shops, home furnishing stores and restaurants. The anchor retailers also have locations in other San Antonio shopping centers.

The Rouse Co. and the La Cantera Development Co. are the developers. La Cantera Development is a subsidiary of USAA Real Estate Co. and USAA.
