Crews Descend on 1.3 Mil-SF Shops at La Cantera Site

SAN ANTONIO-It's been a long time in coming, but work finally begins on the 1.3 million-sf, high-end Shops at La Cantera. The Rouse Co. and a USAA subsidiary are the developers of the 148-acre retail project.

SAN ANTONIO-Dirt is moving on the Shops at La Cantera, the 1.3 million-sf, high-end retail center in northwest San Antonio. With a formal groundbreaking anticipated later this year, the Rouse Co. project is shooting for a spring 2004 opening.

Site work begins this week to prepare for construction, Nancy Tucker, a Rouse spokeswoman, tells GlobeSt.com. The work consists of clearing a portion of the 148-acre tract and the mall footprint. The developers had previously said work would begin in late 2001. She says the design plan for the center is still being developed.

The center is part of a bigger 1,677-acre development at the intersection of Interstate 10 and Loop 1604, one of San Antonio’s fastest growing areas. Other parts of the development are the La Cantera Golf Club and Palmer Course at La Cantera, the Six Flags Fiesta Texas theme park and the Westin La Cantera Resort.
