The firm has been hired to provide geotechnical services through the building's design phase. However, because of the tight construction schedule the team will be providing its services throughout construction, rather than prior to construction as is the norm, explains Ross Khiabani, senior principle engineer and managing director of Leighton's Irvine office.

Shallow ground water and the high density commercial development in the area are the primary challenges facing Leighton and Associates in regard to laying the foundation. In addition, the building's close proximity to other structures has led the company to choose a foundation that requires little drilling, minimizing construction noise and vibration that could potentially disturb and damage surrounding buildings, says Khiabani. Nearby buildings include the recently restored Los Angeles City Hall and the former St. Vibiana¹s Cathedral, now slated for renovation.
