In addition, 1000 megawatts of wind turbine capacity will be sited in wind resource areas throughout Minnesota.

The Mesaba Energy Project, which could ultimately cost about $84 million, could create about 1,000 direct, secure, long-term jobs for the workers of the Iron Range and will attract $2 billion to $3 billion in direct investment to the region, the agency says. The IRRRB, headquartered in Eveleth, MN, will contribute $1.5 million of the $6.5 million it will cost for preliminary environmental impact studies and other preparatory work.

"This project will transform the economic future of the Iron Range," says John Swift, IRRR Commissioner.

Tom Micheletti, a principal of Minneapolis-based Excelsior Energy, says the Mesaba Energy Project could help avert the electricity shortfall projected in the region in 2007. Julie Jorgensen, another principal of the energy development company, adds the "the project will clean up the air in Minnesota by deploying state-of-the-art, clean coal technology."
