O'Brien has served in a number of leadership roles over his 18 years with the company. Since 1997, he has been chief operating officer of Pulte, with day-to-day responsibility for the company's domestic, active adult, international and mortgage operations. He was named as president in 1998.

O'Brien was also instrumental in the company's acquisition of Del Webb Corp., a large builder of active adult communities, in July 2001.
