The company took office space that had been occupied by eLaw, a company that provided online information to law firms. It filed for bankruptcy protection last year. As a result, CarrAmerica, which developed and leases the building, put together a direct lease deal with Layer N, Michael Brown of CarrAmerica's Austin office, says.

Charles Schwab, the San Francisco-based brokerage company, occupies most of the rest of the building and two others at the development. Brown says there's 5,445 sf still available.

Layer N, founded in 2000, started 2001 with four employees and ended with 42. It expects more growth this year. It's first semiconductor products, which provide network security, are due to be released in the second quarter. The company has venture backing from Austin Ventures, Granite Ventures, Seed Co. Partners and Agave Capital.
