Borders Opens New Distribution Centre to Speed UK Growth

LONDON-Borders Books & Music has opened a new 50,000-sf distribution facility at St Columb Major in Cornwall to allow it to expand its UK chain from the current 12 stores. Five new store openings are planned for 2002.

LONDON-Bookseller Borders Books & Music has set up a new 50,000-sf distribution centre in St Columb Major, Cornwall, to service its 12 existing UK stores and to allow it to expand its UK operation. It plans to open five more stores during 2002 and two sites have already been secured in Thurrock, Essex and Islington, North London.

The £3.5 million ($5.1 million) development in Cornwall was jointly funded by the South West Regional Development Agency and the European Union through its Objective One funding programme. The grant aid was sufficient to overcome the locational disadvantages of a national distribution facility located on the remote south-west peninsula.
