Tribe Says Casinos Should be Shut Down

DETROIT, MI-An appeals court says two of the three casino operators in Michigan were selected to build in Detroit as a result of preferential treatment. The LacVieux Desert Band of Lake Superior Indians says all three should shut down.

DETROIT, MI-The Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled that the ordinance allowing Detroit officials to pick three casino developers was invalid because it relied on preferential treatment. The LacVieux Desert Band of Lake Superior Indians, casino owners based in Watersmeet, MI, filed the case in 1997 after it had unsuccessfully bid on building a casino in Detroit.

The band says it demands the three existing casinos in Detroit to shut down because of the ruling.

MotorCity Casino, MGM Grand and Greektown Casino have operated for about three years in the city out of what were considered temporary facilities.
