Tribe Supports Yucca Mountain Fuel Storage

PRAIRIE ISLAND, MN-The Prairie Island Indian Community sits about 600 yards from Xcel Energy's temporary nuclear waste storage site, the closest any community is in the US. The community owns and manages the Treasure Island Casino.

PRAIRIE ISLAND, MN-The Prairie Island Indian Community says it favors recommendations of US Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham that Yucca Mountain in Nevada be chosen as the permanent repository for spent nuclear fuel. The Prairie Island community, which owns and manages the Treasure Island Casino here, says it is the closest community in the US to a temporary nuclear waste storage site.

“We believe that storing nuclear waste in a remote, militarily secure location, in a facility designed for permanent storage is a better solution than leaving it where it sits, virtually unguarded and only yards away from vulnerable communities such as ours,” says Audrey Kohnen, president of the Prairie Island Tribal Council.
