BOSTON-Major League Baseball officially approved the sale of the Boston Red Sox from the Yawkey Trust to a group of investors led by John Henry and Tom Werner. It is the new owners of the team who will decide whether the team will build a new ballpark or renovate Fenway Park.

The often-contentious sale, in which last minute offers were made from rival bidders and state Attorney General Tom Reilly got involved, was overwhelmingly approved with one abstention. Reilly, who was investigating the bidding process and why Henry’s group won out over higher bidders, reached an agreement with outgoing Red Sox CEO John Harrington in which an additional $10 million will go to the Yawkey Foundation.
