Following the removal of 26 underground storage tanks and the excavation, removal and treatment of about 20,000 tons of soil, Burns Bros. This week submitted to the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality for approval of its corrective action plan to address contamination from leaky tanks at the site, specifically 8600 SW Ellingsen Rd.

Burns Bros. senior vice president Grant Marsh was unavailable to speak with GlobeSt.com Friday morning about the costs of cleanup, the specifics of the redevelopment plan, and how his plans for the site may have changed due to the recession. The DEQ filing says simply that Burns Bros. "proposes redevelopment of the site as a strip mall."

In April 2001, two years after the truck stop had been dismantled and before the recession was really recognizable, Marsh told local reporters the plan was to redevelop the property into a mixed-use commercial center that may include some class A office and a hotel. There also were unconfirmed rumors that Costco and Target already had signed letters of intent to locate there.

In August 1998, Burns Bros. sold 17 of its 19 truck stops to Westlake, Ohio-based Travel Centers of America. The Wilsonville site is one of the two the company did not sell. GlobeSt.com will follow up this story when Marsh is reached for comment.

Meantime, the corrective action plan is available for public review and comment.
