Girls Shelter Gets $4.5-Mil Building

DETROIT-Inner-city youth will benefit from Alternatives For Girls' new 32,000-sf building at West Grand Boulevard and Michigan Avenue. DaimlerChrysler Corp. puts financing of over the top with a $250,000 donation.

DETROIT-A $4.5-million facility for a charity group is being built thanks to donations in time to assist a local grant. Alternatives For Girls, an outreach center for homeless and inner-city female teens, needed a new home, says Sharon Stoner, the group’s development specialist.

“We’re currently housed in about four different locations, with our main offices at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. However, it’s going to close next year, and our other rented space will also be unavailable, so we we’re going to be homeless,” she tells GlobeSt.com.

The 73-year-old church is likely to be shut down by the Archdiocese of Detroit.
