The restaurant, which features lunches in the $10 to$15 range and dinners from $25 to $30, opened in the Sugar Building at 1530 16th St. The 190-seat space fills a space that has been vacant for more than 30 years.
Gumbo's is owned and operated by Fired Up Inc., an Austin, TX-based company. Creed Ford and Norman Abdallah, two former Brinker International Executives, founded it in 1997. They bought the Gumbo's concept in 1999.
The company thinks it can flourish in Denver despite the closing of high-profile restaurants such as Café Odyssey in the Denver Pavilions and hotel occupancies at the lowest level since 1990.
The National Association of Restaurant Association says Colorado is the third fastest growing market for restaurant sales in the US. The association predicts restaurant sales will grow by 6% this year, slightly higher than the national average.
