The UC Berkeley plan includes building several hundred residential units, a community center and retail areas; relocating two baseball fields to the Gill Tract area; and bulldozing 152 apartments that were built during World War II to make way for newer units. The plan also includes open space area, with gardens, trees and parking areas.
The redevelopment site, which is located between Codornices Creek and Buchanan, is a 26-acre site, which is valued at approximately $100 million. This project is part of a master plan that was approved four years ago by UC Regents and amended to transform the land-use part form academic reserve to a mixed housing community.
The university will review proposals from developers in March and choose five finalists to present more detailed proposals.
