Camera Cinemas, which has been around for 27 years, is trying to reach a new lease agreement and a low-interest loan to renovate and expand the Camera 3 Theater on Second and San Carlos Streets. However, after several months of meetings between theater officials and the city, there has been no progress.
Camera Cinemas officials say that lease agreements are especially difficult in downtown San Jose. It may be even harder at this time since the city is negotiating with The Palladium Co. to build a $1 billion shopping and entertainment district that will include a multi-screen movie theater.
The Palladium Company, who has been delayed in the project due to financing, will not present a formal project plan until the middle of the year. City officials say that the project shouldn't cause any conflict with the Camera Cinemas project.
The current Camera 3 lease expires in September 2003. In addition, the company owns the Camera One on South First Street, the Towne 3 Theater on The Alameda and the Los Gatos Cinema on North Santa Cruz Avenue in Los Gatos.
