Mayor to Speak at Empowerment Zone Meeting

DETROIT-The oft-criticized Empowerment Zones will be subject of discussions with Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick next week. Residents will hear how the zones will boost economic development and improve neighborhoods.

DETROIT-Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick will be the featured speaker at the Empowerment Zone Development Corp.’s annual town hall meeting Wednesday in southwest Detroit. The EZDC is the operating entity responsible for implementing the Empowerment Zone’s strategic plan and managing its administrative functions.

The mission of the zone is to fund and support economic development and human services programs for Empowerment Zone residents by forming collaborative partnerships.

The mayor, EZDC chairperson Sharon McWhorter and EZDC executive director Larry Givens will speak about the Empowerment Zone, its future and its affect on city residents. Zone residents will hear a number of success stories from fellow residents whose quality of life has been improved as a direct result of zone programs.
