The Montgomery Ward's store that occupied the site has been demolished and "we are about to turn the pad over to Nordstrom's," Julie Harrell, a spokeswoman at the mall, tells GlobeSt.com. The 145,000-sf store is scheduled to open in August 2003, "in time for back-to-school shopping," she says.
Along with the Nordstrom, the 670,000-sf mall, owned and operated by Indianapolis-based Simon Property Group, will add 40,000 sf for more shops. The west wing of the mall will be extended 100 linear feet on two floors leading to the new Nordstrom store. The Montgomery Ward's store closed last year after the retailer filed for bankruptcy and went out of business.
Nordstrom, based in Seattle, joins Sears, Foley's, Dillard's and JCPenney as a Barton Creek Square anchor. Its addition to the mall is the mall's second big remodeling project in recent years. A 14-screen General Cinema theater opened in 1999.
Nordstrom, which opened its first Texas store in 1996 at Dallas' Galleria, plans to have six stores in the Lone Star state by 2004. The company plans to open at Houston's Galleria in spring 2003 and Dallas's NorthPark Center in Dallas in fall 2003. A store at La Cantera in San Antonio will follow in spring 2004.
