The Twins have sought a roughly $325-million stadium that would seat about 42,000 fans, and the Vikings have sought a 60,000-seat stadium that would cost about $500 million. University officials say they would like an on-campus stadium, but only if it didnot detract from other state funding for the school.

While task force members urged the construction of two stadiums, many legislators want to deal only with the baseball decision this year. Task force members say they were convinced a remodeled Metrodome would not suit the Vikings, but they left the issue alive for legislators to argue.

Most on the task force think new taxes and user fees recommended by the task force, when coupled with still-unspecified contributions by team owners and the communities where the stadiums would be built, are more than enough to pay for both a baseball andfootball stadium, either with or without gaming proceeds.

The task force, appointed by Ventura and legislative leaders in November, ended up avoiding a stand on how much money team owners should pay for new stadiums andwhat limit should be put on the state's contribution.
