MCDA Seeks $200,000 for Brownfield Work

MINNEAPOLIS-Two of the four projects would become sites of affordable housing projects. Another could yield a mixed-used development if the Environmental Protection Agency comes through with the grant.

MINNEAPOLIS-The Minneapolis Community Development Agency has applied to the Environmental Protection Agency for supplemental funding to continue the city’s brownfields pilot program, originated in 1999 and including sites in an Empowerment Zone. If successful, the city would receive $150,000 to continue and expand existing brownfields assessment efforts and $50,000 to assess brownfields for green space purposes.

The EPA’s pilot program provides the opportunity to conduct environmental assessments on orphan sites, vacant properties that previously had been given low priority due to size, location, level of perceived pollution or unusual circumstances.

A brownfield is a contaminated site that has potential for redevelopment or reuse.
