64 Schools Land on Brownfield Danger List

DETROIT-A child-proofing study of five states shows almost 1,200 schools have been built on or near contaminated landfills or former industrial properties. That's little surprise to school officials and parents here.

DETROIT-A new elementary school, built on the site with former uses such as a brass foundry, steel manufacturing company, pharmaceuticals manufacturing, lead batteries and paint making, has made a nationwide list of schools that are on or near contaminated property. Beard Elementary in Detroit was just one of 64 schools built on or near brownfield sites, mostly industrial abandoned property or landfills that could harbor chemicals or other contaminants.

The study was recently released by the Child Proofing Our Communities Campaign. The study found 43 schools in California, 818 schools in Massachusetts, 36 schools in New Jersey and 235 schools in New York, along with the Michigan schools, that are within a half-mile of a Superfund or state-identified contaminated site.

At Beard, the news is old. Fearful parents threatened to not send their children to the school in September, only to be reassured by administrators that it was safe.
