Permits for office buildings rose 10.3% to $169.4 million, and amusements and recreation increased 82.2% to $24.2 million. However, industrial construction plunged 45.3% to $90.3 million in permit value. Retail fell 21.3% to $138.7 million and hotels were down 7.6% to $72.2 million.

Multifamily home construction, including apartments and condominiums, was also down, from 6,760 in 2000 to 6,319 units last year. Overall, nonresidential valuation was nearly $1.2 billion, down 14.5% from 2000's $1.4 billion. Nonresidential activity is measured in dollars rather than permits issued.
