"The opportunity now exists to develop a fair ballpark solution to keep the Twins here far beyond 2002," says Bill Lester, executive director of the Metropolitan Sports Facilities Commission, which runs the Metrodome.

Lester says the court ruling reaffirms the use agreement between the MSFC and the Twins.

The commission supports construction of a new Twins home but believes a renovated Metrodome would meet the Minnesota Vikings' needs. A recent state-appointed task force, however, recommends a new ballpark for the Twins and a new football stadium for the Minnesota Vikings and the University of Minnesota.

The state high court let stand a ruling of the Minnesota Court of Appeals, which upheld a Hennepin County District Court injunction preventing Major League Baseball from shutting down the Twins before the 2002 season. The Supreme Court justices gave no reason for not hearing the matter.

Since Nov. 6, baseball owners have said they may want to "contract" two teams because of their alleged financial problems. The Twins, because they generate less local revenue than most clubs, were one of the teams, along with the Montreal Expos. The Expos likely will play the season, too, as a result of complex deals among owners.
