ST. PAUL, MN-On the same day Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig gave up on contraction for this season, a new ballpark for the Minnesota Twins got a kind word from an unexpected source: Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura. Previously skeptical of the need for and adamantly opposed to public financing for a new stadium, Ventura told WCCO-AM Selig’s decision opens the door for talks about a new stadium.

Ventura said he wouldn’t rule out calling a special session to “take care of the baseball stadium issue.’

Meanwhile, Selig says baseball would pursue contraction for the 2003 season. Selig backed off contraction this year after the Minnesota Supreme Court refused to hear its appeal of a lower court decision that required the team to play in the Metrodome this season because it’s lease specifies that.
