Demolition will allow direct access to the center for the first time from Speer Boulevard, allowing conventioneers to stay off the Downtown grid, says Curt Fentress, architect for the project that will double the size of the meeting space to 600,000 sf.

Fentress says that the new convention center will be as recognizable as the Opera House in Sydney, Australia.

The new building not only will be better looking than the current facility, but it will be more functional, he says.

A light rail station will be moved to underneath the building and trains will run on what is known as the ''Big Bend,'' as the grid street pattern will be re-routed under the center.

The 600,000 sf of exhibition space will be more efficient and functional than many convention centers that are larger, he says. The 600,000-sf space also will be ''the largest room,'' between Denver and San Francisco, he says.
