Park Service to Begin Building Visitor Facility

ST. PAUL, MN-A McKnight Foundation grant of $500,000 will enable the Science Museum of Minnesota to add a 2,000-sf National Park Service visitor facility for the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area.

ST. PAUL, MN-A $500,000 grant from The McKnight Foundation to the National Park Foundation will spur construction on the long-planned Mississippi National River and Recreation Area visitor facility, located within the Science Museum of Minnesota. Located just inside the Science Museum’s main entrance, the 2,000-sf Mississippi RiverNational Center will be open to the public without charge.

The National Park Service will lease the space from the museum for about $50,000 a year. The National Park Service expects to open the National Center in early 2003.

JoAnn Kyral, MNRRA superintendent, says she appreciated the Science Museum’s willingness to hold a “prime area in their facility for two years while we sought the next phase of our funding.” The Mississippi River National Center will serve as the National Park Service’s visitor facility for the MNRRA, providing information to visitors on the area’s significance as a natural, historical, cultural, recreational and economic resource.
