Struggling City Buys Land for Development

PONTIAC, MI-A former mental hospital site is immediately sold to a developer for a technology park and homes. The deal puts the site back on the tax rolls after a 100-year absence.

PONTIAC, MI-The city has purchased about 220 acres from the state department of management and budget and has already sold it to a developer to create a mixed-use, office and housing project. The city finalized the deal Jan. 24, paying $10.2 million for the now-vacant property along Elizabeth Lake Road, says Pontiac growth group executivedirector Mattie Lasseigne.

The site is better known as the Clinton Valley Center mental health facility. The property had sat vacant after the state abandoned the large brick facilities many years ago, and they were torn down amid resident protest in mid-2000.

Lasseigne tells GlobeSt.com the land has not been taxed for more than 100 years.
