WESTWOOD, MA-Equity Residential Properties has proposed adding 138 units to an affordable housing complex here near Route 109. The existing 180-unit complex is for senior housing.

According to an official with the town, there is an existing comprehensive permit for the site, which was granted over 20 years ago. The permit allows a developer to bypass local zoning laws provided the project has a 25% affordable housing component and the town has not reached its required 10% affordable housing. The official tells GlobeSt.com that Westwood’s affordable housing is at 7.24% but this project would bring it up to 10% as the developer has proposed making 25% of the units in the addition affordable. The town, she says, is supportive of Equity’s proposal. The complex is located on approximately 20 acres here.
