This list has been pared down from the initial 297 pre-proposals requesting more than $380 million in Corridor funds.

This year, the committee expects to award about $45 million in funds to support projects in basic research, applied research and commercialization.

"The field has been narrowed. The quality of pre-proposals submitted was extremely high and so the competition for funding remains fierce," says Doug Rothwell, chairman of the committee. The 297 pre-proposals were reviewed by more than 50 experts recruited by the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences.

The applicants receiving invitations to submit full proposals must respond by March 28. These full proposals will then undergo a rigorous screening process that includes three in-depth expert panel member reviews organized by AAAS.

The state of Michigan has committed $1 billion over 20 years from its tobacco settlement money to energize the life sciences industry here, particularly in what is known as the Michigan Life Sciences Corridor.

The corridor extends roughly from Detroit to Grand Rapids and the surrounding areas, including the cities of Ann Arbor, East Lansing and Kalamazoo. Three major public research universities and the Van Andel Institute are specifically included in the Corridor.

The accepted list includes a request by Integrated Sensing Systems Inc. to receive about $2 million for a BIO-MEMS commercialization center, the University of Michigan has asked for $4.5 million for a biopharmaceutical research and development center and Western Michigan has asked for $750,000 for new laboratory facilities for start-up companies.

Also, The Research and Technology Institute of West Michigan has asked for$3 million for the Grand Rapids Smart Zone developments.
