Garvin, whose appointment was revealed Saturday, will work with a core group of two urban planners while continuing to serve on a volunteer basis as planning director for NYC2012, the not-for-profit organization dedicated to bringing the Olympic Games here in 2012. He will also continue to serve on the New York City Planning Commission.

"The revitalization of Lower Manhattan presents many complex challenges. We need to develop an appropriate way to honor those who perished on September 11th," says Garvin. "The residents, business and property owners of lower Manhattan expect to get back to normal as quickly as possible."

Other new LMDC appointments include Tara Snow, who will serve as vice president of community and government relations, and Matthew Higgins, who is onboard as vice president of communications.

The LMDC, a joint city-state organization dedicated to revitalizing Downtown following the Sept. 11 World Trade Center attacks, is governed by an 11-member board of directors--seven appointed by Governor George Pataki and four by Mayor Michael Bloomberg. It is chaired by John C. Whitehead. Recently, the group formed several advisory councils to represent various constituencies' interests in the rebuilding of Lower Manhattan.
