The new location, a seven-story building that totals 300,000 sf, will provide WGBH with 40,000 additional sf of space and will accommodate all of WGBH's activities at one site. The station currently occupies over a dozen buildings. Of those buildings, WGBH owns 125,000 sf of the space it is on now and leases the other 135,000 sf from Harvard University. The new building will provide office space for staff and there are plans for an adjoining broadcast studio to be built at the corner of Market and Beacon Streets for television and radio productions.

According to Jeanne Hopkins, vice president for corporate communications for WGBH, Harvard owns a good deal of the land that surrounds WGBH's current offices and "it makes sense for them to acquire these sites."

Calls to the university were not returned by presstime, but in a released statement from WGBH it says that Harvard "has played a key role in helping WGBH plan for the new location at Brighton Landing. Over the past two years they have assisted WGBH in scouting more than a dozen sites in the Boston metropolitan area." WGBH's original studio was destroyed in a fire in 1965 when Harvard stepped in and offered to lease to the station's its current location.

In the released statement Henry Becton, WGBH's president, says that the station was looking to stay in the Allston-Brighton neighborhood and adds that at the new location WGBH will have an opportunity to "design a facility suited to the digital media needs of the future."

Hopkins would not disclose any financial information related to the deal but she tells GlobeSt.com that the station expects to move in to the new location within three years.
