Jerry Frey, managing director of the CB Richard Ellis office, says that while there was a bit of timing and luck involved, the office's growth has been planned. "This is an intentional strategy that we've been pursuing for over a year and a half," Frey tells GlobeSt.com.
Besides hiring Heather Case as director of asset services and Bart Matheney as senior vice president of leasing, Frey hired about 23 others in leasing, property management and property engineering. The CB Richard Ellis already had 30 people, according to Frey. It also has seven in its San Antonio, which Frey oversees. Insignia/ESG had said it was leaving Austin to concentrate on the Dallas and Houston markets in Texas.
CB Richard Ellis also has added about 1.5 million sf to its Austin portfolio as some clients followed the Insignia/ESG people to the firm. "There are probably one or two clients left who haven't made a firm decision, but pretty much all the other things have already transitioned and agreed to," Frey says.
Frey came to Austin in 2000 from CB Richard Ellis' Houston office. His initial focus was on Austin because "it's a little more of an institutional market and there are some real clear needs that I felt I had to address," he says." I did that by bringing in Bart and Heather and their associates."
Now, he plans to look to San Antonio. "We're going to be doing some selective hiring down there, trying to recruit senior professionals that we feel like will fit with our program down there," Frey says.
