The garage was funded by three sources: $1.5 million from Denver's Neighborhood Improvement Bond Fund, which voters approved in 1998; $7.5 million from the zoo's improvement bond fund; and an $8.5-million certificate of participation issued by the city and county of Denver. The $8.5 million will be repaid with zoo admission fees.
The new garage includes closed-circuit security cameras, emergency call stations on all covered levels, natural light throughout the top three levels, an in-house security office and regular security patrols.
The design/build team included the Denver firms of Haselden Construction Inc and RNL Design, the largest architectural firm in the Rocky Mountain region.
In addition, the team included the structural engineering firm of Jirsa Hendrick and Associates. Shalkey and Team was the urban design group.
