Cheesecake Factory Will Open in Soon-to-Close Arbor Theater

AUSTIN-Simon Property Group terminates a lease with Knoxville, TN-based Regal Cinemas, which is under bankruptcy protection, and signs a state-of-the-art casual dining concept to the seven-screen Arbor Theater. The eatery opens in the fall.

AUSTIN-When the Arbor Theater opened in 1985 at the Arboretum Shopping Center, it was state of the art for sight and sound. Even the lobby was different. The decor represented the look of “Back to the Future,” the movie that opened the theater, replete with a clock tower, clouds and thunder booming every 15 minutes. Come March 31, the seven-screen theater will go dark to make way for a Cheesecake Factory restaurant.

Simon Property Group, based in Indianapolis, terminated the theater’s lease as stipulated in the contract with Knoxville, TN-based Regal Cinemas and signed one with the Cheesecake Factory Inc., based in Calabasas Hills, CA. The state-of-the-art casual dining restaurant will open in the fall, says Billie Scott of Simon Property Group.

Scott declined to discuss details of the Cheesecake Factory lease. The restaurant company, in regulatory filings, said it leases all its restaurants for 10 years to 20 years.Simon Property Group acquired the 209,000-sf shopping center in 1999 from Dallas-based Trammell Crow Co., the center’s developer.
