Twins' Ballpark Advances, Football Deal Stalls

ST. PAUL, MN-Two bills supporting a $350-million Twins ballpark here passes a committee, while a $500-million Vikings-Gophers plan loses its first test in the House. The threat of Major League Baseball contraction appears to be helping the Twins' ballpark bid.

ST. PAUL, MN-Two bills for a Twins ballpark in St. Paul have been approved by a House committee while another panel in the Legislature defeated a measure for a stadium for the Vikings and University of Minnesota. The Twins are looking at building a $350-million stadium, while the Vikings are proposing a $500-million stadium.

Sites have not been selected, although St. Paul is vying for the Twins ballpark and Minneapolis seems the likely choice for a football stadium.

The Minnesota Twins recently opened spring training after spending much of the fall and winter wondering if they would be eliminated by Major League Baseball. That effort was abandoned for this year after Major League Baseball lost a court battle. One reason the Twins have a better change of getting approval this year is the continuing threat ofcontraction.
