The second phase, now underway, consists of two new villa buildings and a recreation center with three swimming pools, an outdoor spa, game room, and other features. The first phase of the project, designed by Sprotte + Watson and completed last fall, includes three new villa buildings and one refurbished existing building.

By July, the project at 8860 Lawrence Welk Drive in Escondido, which broke ground in 1999, will provide a total of 21 new buildings, with 146 time shares. Jon Fredricks, president of The Welk Resort, said the typical buyer stays at the resort several days during the year. The rest of the time, the units are rented out through time-sharing agreements.

Each year, about 200,000 people visit The Welk Resort, off Interstate 15 north of Escondido, according to resort officials. The new villas and recreation center are intended to attract more, they say.
