RICHMOND, VA-A site in the downtown area has been selected for the construction of the new $95 federal courthouse. The US General Services Administration (GSA) in Philadelphia selected the location which is a parcel at the corners of Broad and Seventh streets, and Grace and Eighth streets. Construction on the 280,000-sf, eight-story structure is expected to begin in about two years.

“We still don’t have final appropriations from Congress,” GSA’s Jim Williams explains to GlobeSt.com. “That is not under our control, but we anticipate funding in 2004 for the construction portion.” The total $95 million figure would cover site design, construction, and management. In selecting the space, Williams says, “one thing that was really important to us was to make sure that we involved all parties — the City of Richmond, the Historic Preservation Committee, the Economic Development Committee.” After consultation with all the relevant groups, GSA made the site selection. New York-based Robert A.M. Stern Architects is on board as the lead designer. Upon delivery, which is slated for summer 2007, part of the structure will be available for leasing.
