The estimated $500,000-$700,000 project would involve a waterfront park, with tiered seating for concerts and a paved area for open-air events. Sealed bids on the project will be received for the next month, and the contract will be awarded to the lowest bidder.
Officals from the Olympia Thurston Chamber of Commerce, the Olympia Downtown Association and the Farmer's Market all showed support for the plaza and say they expect it will help boost area tourism.
Others have complained about the cost and doubt the project's benefit.
