The restored pavilion will accommodate canoe, kayak, paddleboat, bicycle, in-line skate, cross-country ski, snowshoe, and ice-skate rentals and provide food services.
The Detroit recreation department will provide $210,000 in matching funds for the project.
The Flynn Pavilion, built in 1949 by famous architect Eero Saarinen, has been closed for several years and canoe/bicycle rentals have not existed since the mid-1970s.
The restored facility will offer canoeing on 2.2 miles of canals and two interconnected lakes located on Belle Isle. It is aimed at rejuvenating the surrounding area.
Belle Isle, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is a 982-acre island park located in the Detroit River about two miles from Downtown Detroit. It was designed by Frederick Law Olmstead.
