Council Approves Downtown Conference Center

SALEM, OR-The city will now begin crafting an agreement with Phoenix Inn hotel chain owner VIP's Industries, which plans to sell the city the land for the $18-million project and then build a hotel next door to service it.

SALEM, OR-The Salem City Council this week unanimously approved plans to develop an $18-million Downtown conference center. City staffers are now crafting an agreement with Phoenix Inn hotel chain owner VIP Industries, which owns the land the city wants to build on and land next to that on which it plans to build a hotel.

The conference center’s construction would be financed by urban-renewal funds. The issue of ongoing funding had some citizens demanding a public vote on the project, especially since the city is currently facing a $5.9 million budget shortfall.
