The transfer of the base will allow the city to redevelop the property along the lines of the Specific Plan/Reuse Plan. This plan calls for the development of residential, business and recreational properties on the parcel.
The potential redevelopment of the former Marine base has been mired in controversy for years, as two school districts in neighboring Santa Ana have been fighting to build educational facilities on the property. The city of Tustin is still working on an agreement with the school districts that would result in 22 acres for Santa Ana Unified and 15 acres for Rancho Santiago Community College Districts. In addition, Santa Ana would receive $38 million to build a high school in a different location.
