Today's celebration marks the first major construction at the former base since 1994, when the parcel was turned over to the city of San Bernardino. The new construction will occur at the site of Kohl's Corp.'s planned industrial complex at 890 E. Mill St. The department store giant acquired the 60-acre parcel last December from the project's master developer, Dallas-based Hillwood Investments.

Kohl's, which plans to spend $25 million on the new project, will initially employ 300 associates at the new distribution center. The facility, which may add another 600 employees over the next five years, will support Kohl's planned expansion into the Southwest.
