The National City bay is being dredged and its wharf extended to accommodate the arrival of more cargo, primarily autos and lumber.
Construction is scheduled to be completed by November 2003. Along with the dredging project, the wharf will be extended by more than 1,200 feet. The additional wharf space and water depth will allow the terminal to accommodate more of its primary commodities: autos and lumber.
The port will pay for the project, expected to give the area an economic boost.
The wharf is at the foot of 24th Street and leased by auto importer Pasha Services, which reportedly brought more than 330,000 cars through the area last year.
In January, dredging began on another project, the $15.5 million National City Marina project at the Sweetwater River and San Diego Bay. When complete, the marina will have 234 boat slips.
