Surveyors Fete U.S. Warehouse-to-Office Conversion

SAN FRANCISCO-Calling it a "standard for others to follow," the 134-year-old London-based Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors gave out its first award for a U.S. project to AMB Property Corp. for transforming an abandoned sugar warehouse on San Francisco's waterfront into a class A office building.

SAN FRANCISCO-The London-based Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors has presented two awards to AMB Property Corp. for its transformation of a dilapidated San Francisco warehouse and pier into a technologically-advanced office building. Heretofore, the 110,000-member, 134-year-old architectural and land management organization has not honored a project in the United States.

Pier 1, as it’s called, was built in 1931 as a 90,000-sf waterfront warehouse and distribution center for the C&H Sugar Refining Corp. As part of the redevelopment, Pier 1 was expanded to 151,000 sf by “floating” a mezzanine over the ground floor without altering the original exterior architectural design.
