With the rejection, the police force will have to continue working out of portable trailers along the waterfront. Since a 1995 flood that destroyed their old building, the police force, which consists of 30 employees, have been operating from these trailers. The trailers are not seismically sound.
As soon as the proposal was made to build the Mediterranean-style facility, the complaints started accumulating. Some said it would violate Sausalito's feng shui, the ancient Chinese art of placing things to ensure a harmonious energy flow. Others complained it was too expensive, too big, and would block off one end of the Main Street in Sausalito, in northern California.
For thousands of years, the Chinese have applied the philosophy of Feng Shui to create auspicious energy flow within their surroundings. Literally translated as wind and water or the harmony between nature and living beings, Feng Shui utilizes the delicate flow of universal life energy to enhance atmospheres.

"This was a proposal that was to be 80 percent the length of a football field, and a lot of people saw it as really out of character with Sausalito," he says. "We're willing to participate in the process of arriving at a new siting and or design that will enjoy broad community support."
