SAUSALITO, CA-Concerns about the town’s appearance and a strong belief in the ancient Chinese art of Feng Shui caused Sausalito voters to reject a proposal to build a $7.8 million police and fire building.

With the rejection, the police force will have to continue working out of portable trailers along the waterfront. Since a 1995 flood that destroyed their old building, the police force, which consists of 30 employees, have been operating from these trailers. The trailers are not seismically sound.

As soon as the proposal was made to build the Mediterranean-style facility, the complaints started accumulating. Some said it would violate Sausalito’s feng shui, the ancient Chinese art of placing things to ensure a harmonious energy flow. Others complained it was too expensive, too big, and would block off one end of the Main Street in Sausalito, in northern California.
