DETROIT-Mayor Kwame M. Kilpatrick is making a priority of demolishing abandoned structures in the city, including residential and commercial buildings, and plans on placing a priority on dangerous buildings if they’re near schools. The mayor witnessed the demolition of an abandoned building located at 4523 Montclair, directly across from Joy Middle School in early February, and then later that day inspected demolition activity at a second site at 3016 Montclair near Southeastern High School.

The demolition activity fulfilled a pledge he made in his inaugural address to begin an accelerated demolition schedule. About 25 dangerous and abandoned buildings were taken down that day and were part of a list of 90 buildings scheduled to be taken down before the week is over.

Kilpatrick hopes were to demolish more than 5,000 abandoned buildings by 2003.
