ST. PAUL, MN-A new Minnesota Twins ballpark bill narrowly approved Tuesday by the state House Tax Committee would extend its 6.5% sales tax to newspapers and magazine subscriptions. In addition to taxing newspapers and magazines as well as food and drinks in bars and restaurants, levies on hotel and motel rooms and parking fees in the host city would also be needed to finance a $340 million baseball park and perhaps a new football stadium for the Vikings and the University of Minnesota Gophers.

The bill, which passed by a 13-11 vote, would require Minnesota voters to decide in the Sept. 10 primary election whether to tax themselves at the newsstand.

The so-called “advisory referendum” would not be legally binding–the state constitution doesn’t provide for statewide referendums–but state lawmakers would recognize it.
